About the role

Flat6Labs is looking for a Senior Economist Consultant to join our team on the Green Growth amp; Jobs Accelerator Program (GGJAP). As a consultant, you will be required to analyze market trends to advise on the selection of economic sectors and sub-sectors with higher green growth potential and a high potential for the creation of decent jobs for youth in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, and Morocco. The analysis will be based on up-to-date data on economic sectors that currently exhibit strong potential for labor-intensive green growth. A clear selection methodology will be developed based on both the existing performance of these sectors as well as the potential for job creation growth. A set of comprehensive and conclusive findings will be requested as guidance for the selection of SMEs and sectoral focus for the accelerator program.

Contract Type: Consultant

Expected Contract Duration: 3 - 5 months

Main Responsibilities:

  • Conducting a detailed literature review on green growth potential in the four countries and skills and employability of labor in these countries in these sectors.
  • Collecting, processing, and analyzing sectoral data.
  • Conducting key informant interviews and secondary research, with the support of junior researchers as part of the Flat6Labs GGJA project.
  • If data are available, analyze market trends and demand to gain insights into the current and potential contribution of key sectors to each national economy. This includes assessing the potential of exporting green products and services to significant markets.
  • Conducting a comprehensive review of existing policies and regulations, including incentives provided by governments for the growth of these sectors, related to the subject matter. This includes examining any evidence of changes in production or employment patterns that have occurred concurrently.
  • Analyzing employment data and secondary sources to define employment levels over the past 5 years in the four countries disaggregated by gender and with particular attention to youth demographics.
  • Designing and proposing a clear methodology and indicators to be applied for the selection of sector and subsector analysis.
  • Identifying the most promising sectors and subsectors for creating jobs (including for women), contributing to the country's economic green growth, and attracting investments at the international level.
  • Communicating findings and recommendations in a variety of forms, including a methodological note for each country, presentations, tabular and graphical representations.
  • Producing a publishable report combining key economic research amp; findings from each of the 4 countries targeted (Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, and Morocco).

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in economics, environmental economics, development economics, socioeconomics, or any other relevant field. PhD degree would be a plus.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in macroeconomic policy, economic research, and analysis in the context of development cooperation or related areas is required.
  • Excellent written and communication skills in English amp; Arabic (French proficiency is a plus)
  • First-hand knowledge of the country’s economy (at least one of the 4 countries; Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco).
  • Proven experience in analyzing labor market and green economy data, and forecasting growth and employment prospects
  • Strong publication record or previous experience producing similar studies for international development organizations.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in working with data to drive insights and decision-making.
  • Excellent written- and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
